I was born in Bucharest in 1988 and I moved to Montreal (where I learned to speak French) at the age of 4. At age 8, I moved to Vancouver. And here I am!
Name History
My english name is Mike Martin. My Romanian name is Mihnea Martinescu. Mihnea is not the equivalent of Mike/Michael. That would be Mihai (pronounced Me-Hi). Mihnea cel Rau (Mihnea the Wrongdoer/Evil/Bad) was an Emperor of Wallachia. He was the father of Vlad the Impaler (i.e. Dracula).
I've been looking for the etymology of Mihnea and supposedly (keyword: supposedly) it is derived from the Saxon word Mahnit. It is suggested that Mahnit means Mad, Wild, Rabid, Demented, Amuck, Frantic and/or Possessed.
How is it pronounced? Like this: Meeh-nee-uh. People have called me Mish-nee-a, Mish-nay, Me-nee-uh, not Me-nay, not Mik-nay, but Meeh-nee-uh. It is a hard name to pronounce, even for romanian.
